NARRATIVES ~
FIGMENTS & FRAGMENTS
Opening Night Reception: Saturday Jan 15th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 15th - 29th, 2022
Guest Curator | Emma Powell
The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusion are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what is being left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form; they may be literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal.

THEME: The Still Life | JUROR: G.S. Broz
Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer extensive leeway and precise control in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. Still life photography is a demanding genre, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with composition and design skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.
Praxis Gallery seeks photographic art that investigates the genre of the Still Life. Submissions may explore classical to conceptual aspects of the still life, photographing object arrangements that intrigue, engage or entertain the viewer. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.
Juror: : G.S. Broz
In 2018, G.S. Broz relocated to the US after a ten year odyssey in Asia. While based in Shanghai as a corporate broadcast director, he fell in love with photography, finding it a more articulate medium of thought transmission than video. His work examines themes of consciousness, spirituality and ethics. It maintains a sturdy and cinematic quality informed by his pedigree as a filmmaker (B.A., Film Studies, University of Pittsburgh, 1999). After completing his photographic study of China with Proletarian Nudes, Shanghai Ikebana and Infirmary, he went on to explore the Christian iconography of Mumbai with Second Coming. Looking to deepen his perspective beyond Asian locales, he spent 2019 and 2020 painstakingly crafting his first project based in North America, Yankee Enduro. Broz began showing his work in juried shows in 2018 and has since displayed physical work at Carnation Contemporary (Portland, OR), Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts (Providence, RI), Axis Gallery (Sacramento, CA), Temporary Gallery (Cologne, Germany) and La Joya Space (Valencia, Spain). His work has also become a regular part of the programming at Praxis Photo Arts Center in Minneapolis where he recently secured domestic representation. His first solo show was an online exclusive exhibit of selected work from Yankee Enduro with Dama Gallery (Ventura + Los Angeles, CA/Mexico City, MX/Austin, TX) in 2022, followed up in 2023 with an expanded offering at Praxis. In 2021 he built a pioneering private gallery for his work in the metaverse on the Voxels platform. Broz is currently based in Pittsburgh. In addition to his art photography practice he continues to work as a freelance broadcast director and camera operator throughout the US. gsbroz.com
