Spanning two centuries, the magic of night photography has captured the collective imagination of the masses. From the infamously long exposures required by early artists to high-speed color film and the advent of digital technology, the light at night has inspired an explosion of interest among contemporary artists. Natural vistas, celestial bodies, urban landscapes, artificial structures, and nocturnal interludes represent but a few of the limitless subjects of nighttime photography.

Exhibition dates: Nov. 18–Dec. 9, 2023
In most cases, photography is used to “freeze time,” with a still image. Motion in photography creates a paradox: the image is a frozen moment in time but what is captured is an object that is a blur of motion – an apparent streaking, bending, distorting and /or movement of light and objects in the foreground or background of the image frame. Blur can demonstrate the velocity of movement. It can convey the emotional dimensions of the subject photographed, presenting dream-like qualities by invoking the surreal and transitory nature of time passing.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that demonstrates the fundamental qualities that make motion & blur a compelling element of contemporary photography. All genres, capture types, and post-production processes are welcome for submission. Juried by Laura Valenti.

The nude form has been portrayed in art throughout history, from the classical era to the enlightenment and the modern era. The nude figure in western art–specifically in photography–has expressed ideals of female and male beauty along with other human qualities including life, energy, and an array of complicated human emotions.

A "found object" is a material artifact discovered by chance and assigned esthetic value in an artist’s hand. Found art may include a wide array of objects and items either discarded, forgotten, dropped, or misplaced – such as shoes, a fork, shopping carts, signs, doll heads, abandoned cars, clocks, mementos, or any object that can be reimagined through the lens of a camera.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that investigates this idiom: exploring the subject of the “found object” as pure visual form, detached from its history or utility, or conversely, the representation of the object as a catalyst for exploring broader issues such as subjectivity and socialization, memory and loss, or love and death. Praxis Gallery presents an exhibition of photographic art that explores the concepts of order and disorder, and conflict between the two. Selected images focus on these ideas as pure visual form expressed through compositional symmetry or disarray; or examine the cultural, social, or psychological implications of order and disorder (for example, exploring ideas of conformity or dissent, anxiety or calm, obsession or indifference, or other ephemeral expressions of this concept). "Street Photography became recognized as a genre in its own right during the early 1930s. Street Photography is unique in the way it is associated with the photographer's skill in capturing something of the mystery and aura of everyday city living. The Street Photographer is then often likened to the historical figure of the flâneur: namely someone who mingles anonymously amongst the crowd observing and recording the ways the unsuspecting city dweller interacts with his or her environment."
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the genre of street photography from all angles, including people, urban structure, and documentary subject matter. “The most perceptive photographers can make compelling pictures out of uninteresting moments.” –Alex Tehrani
French novelist Georges Perec declared that we should find “an anthropology of the ordinary” as revolt against cultural and mass media exploitation of the exotic - the relentless parade of trauma elevated above the routine of everyday events. Perec’s revolt against the frenzy of trauma (the shameful, the voyeuristic and the spectacular) was to excessively document the ordinary in daily life, meticulously accounting for everything and anything in one’s immediate surroundings in an active attempt to uncover the unimportant and the insignificant.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the in-between moments of life and endeavors to notice the unnoticeable, the mundane, the banal and anti-climactic.

Liquid conforms to the shape of its container. The sky is an abstract sphere, centered on the earth. Liquid, Water, Sky and the liminal space between are by definition poetic and symbolic. Yet there are infinite iterations of liquid & sky: consider our human drive to master and contain liquids (pools, levies, faucets and bottles); idiomatic lamentations of “spilt milk” or “water under the bridge”– while also reaching upward in towering buildings, airplanes, and rockets that push skyward.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic artwork that explores the ideas of liquid and sky in their myriad iterations; from landscapes to still life – from scientific to conceptual, Praxis seeks a broadly interpreted investigation of these forever flowing, forever ethereal ideas.

The power of photography as a tool for storytelling lies in its ability to convey the impression that the image captured within the frame is an accurate representation of a specific moment in time. However, every narrative is inherently limited by the selective inclusion and exclusion of certain elements. This is a crucial aspect of photographic storytelling; it is not only about what is presented within the frame but also what is left out of the frame - and left to the viewer's imagination - granting interpretive liberty (or poetic license) to both the creator and the viewer.
Praxis Gallery presents of photographic art that explore the development of visual narratives through a poetic lens. The stories may take any form ranging from literal depictions to fantasy or fiction, they may be complex or minimalist in approach.

THE STILL LIFE

Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer extensive leeway and precise control in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. Still life photography is a demanding genre, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with composition and design skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that investigates the genre of the Still Life. Submissions may explore classical to conceptual aspects of the still life, photographing object arrangements that intrigue, engage or entertain the viewer. Juror: Kimberly Witham

Exhibition Dates: Apr 15TH - 29TH, 2023
A photographic diptych is a work of art that consists of two photographs that are arranged side by side. Diptychs can convey a story by connecting seemingly unrelated images. The use of two photographs side by side can allow the photographer to experiment with different compositions and to create a sense of balance or symmetry. The two images in a diptych can represent duality or opposites. They allow the photographer to explore different themes, narratives, compositions, and contrasts.

Speaking of the power of photography, Garry Winogrand once said, “Putting four edges around a collection of information or facts transforms it.” Let’s take that a step further: what happens when you put a frame—in the form of a doorway, window, mirror, casket, another picture, or some other structure—in the photograph itself? It may intensify the focus on the thing framed, but what about what’s happening in the margins between the interior frame and the edge of the picture? How does the composition work as a whole? How do the elements inside and outside the framing device interact? What has the photographer gained by including a frame within the picture rather than making it the border of the entire image?
Praxis presents photographic art That explores a frame or multiple frames within an image as the conceptual basis for the aesthetic expression.

A WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH EXHIBITION

We are programmed to understand gender and femininity within narrow and restrictive definitions. Photographs, both historical and contemporary, often reinforce these definitions and boundaries that no longer serve us. Photography has the power to transcend all manner of boundaries. It can blur minuscule lines between otherwise dichotomous realms of physical and philosophical space. If we are to reflect on photography’s capacity to challenge concepts of gender and femininity, we enter into an extraordinary opportunity to re-envision and expand our understanding of all who identify as women. We can confront our programmed understandings and reinterpret, both what is in front of the camera and what is behind it.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art created by or about women image-makers, including trans-women, femme/feminine-identifying, genderqueer, and non-binary lens-based photographic artists.

“Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. Many landscape photographs show little or no human activity and are created in the pursuit of a pure, unsullied depiction of nature, devoid of human influence—instead featuring subjects such as strongly defined landforms, weather, ambient light and other sublime elements. Beyond purely aesthetic considerations, landscapes often contain intensely personal and emotional subjectivities; evidence of secret histories of fondness, love, and nurturing - or of past emotional turbulence, loss, longing, and regret.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic artwork that explores a broad, interpretive, and personal investigation of the landscape - both as a place, or an idea - as a literal expression or conceptual iteration.

Photographic artists are reconsidering the potential of a photograph with a shift to making rather than taking photographs. By using vintage and contemporary photographs as a starting point, artists create physically layered works of art that result in an object, often in reaction to the flood of ubiquitous imagery that digital and cell phone photography has afforded.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art or lens-based artwork that utilizes physical interventions and investigations of photographic surfaces that can include sewing, cutting, drawing, painting, tearing, bending, and weaving, all ways of interrogating the material qualities of a physical photograph to create new realities.

The house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace. We comfort ourselves by reliving memories of protection. Something closed must retain our memories, while leaving them their original value as images. Memories of the outside world will never have the same tonality as those of home and, by recalling these memories, we add to our store of dreams contained in our experience of home. Gaston Bachelard
