Frames Within Frames

2023

One of the great pleasures of jurying an exhibition is seeing the vast and various range of approaches the artists bring to their task. An incomplete list in this case would include subjects breaking the boundaries of the frame, subjects breaking through the frame, multiple frames in a single shot, empty frames, organic framing devices, curtains, windows, doors, arches, rock formations, abstractions, reflections, silhouettes, shadows, a closet, street scenes, a fragmented nude, an aerial photo of fields, car windows, lighted stairs, paintings, a fence.

And that doesn’t begin to get at the variety of colors and textures and subject matter and perspectives and so on. There is a cornucopia of things to enjoy here, and a cornucopia is of course a kind of framing device, one that is often depicted as overflowing—as is the case here.
