Opening Night Reception: Saturday Jan 15th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 15th - 29th, 2022
Guest Curator | Emma Powell
The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusion are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what is being left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form; they may be literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal.

MOTION > BLUR
Reception: Saturday Dec 17TH 6-8PM.
Exhibition Dates: Dec 17TH - 31ST, 2022
Juror: Sandrine Hermand-Grisel
In most cases, photography is used to “freeze time,” with a still image. Motion in photography creates a paradox: the image is a frozen moment in time but what is captured is an object that is a blur of motion – an apparent streaking, bending, distorting and /or movement of light and objects in the foreground or background of the image frame. Blur can demonstrate the velocity of movement. It can convey the emotional dimensions of the subject photographed, presenting dream like qualities by invoking the surreal and transitory nature of time passing. Meteors streak across the sky, ghostly figures move through a room, the artist paints shapes with a light source. These are some examples of how blur represents motion in time-lapse photography.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that demonstrates the fundamental qualities that make motion & blur a compelling element of contemporary photography.

NUDE GEOGRAPHIES
Reception: Saturday Dec 17TH 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: Dec 17TH - 31ST, 2022
Curated By: Praxis Directors
The nude form has been portrayed in art throughout history, from the classical era to the enlightenment and the modern era. The nude figure in western art - specifically in photography - has expressed ideals of female and male beauty along with other human qualities including life, energy, and an array of complicated human emotions.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the nude in any of its varied styles including: figure studies, environmental nudes, implied nudes and erotica - just to name a few of the many iterations of this genre.

BLACK & WHITE
Reception: Saturday Nov 19TH, 2022 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: Nov 19TH - Dec 3RD, 2022
Juror: Robi Chakraborty
More than half a century after the advent of color film, black and white & monochromatic photography continues to capture our collective imagination. Utilizing tone, contrast, texture and shape, monochromatic photography strips its subject to only the most essential visual elements; revealing a sense of soul, substance and meaning – separate from the shifting sentiments, symbolism and cultural associations of color imagery.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that demonstrate the fundamental qualities that make black & white and monochromatic photography an enduring, contemporary art form.

THE LIFE OF COLOR
Reception: Saturday Nov 19TH, 2022 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: Nov 19TH - Dec 3RD, 2022
Color is said to be three-dimensional because of its three unique aspects. When you seek to define a specific color, there are three properties to consider; Hue, Value, and Saturation. These properties are the building blocks of the poetic and symbolic signification of color in creative photographic expression.
Color is a powerful tool in composing a poetic visual statement, and is highly descriptive in developing the imaginative capabilities of the mind’s eye. Certain colors carry a symbolic weight to them that when used in visual arts evokes certain moods, thoughts, ideas, and concepts, merely by their presence. Color creates different emotions and feelings. These reactions are rooted in psychological effects, biological conditioning and cultural imprinting.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores these implications of color as a central device in the creation of compelling photographic art.

“Night does not show things, it suggests them. It disturbs and surprises us with its strangeness. It liberates forces within us which are dominated by our reason during the daytime.” ― Brassai
Spanning two centuries, the magic of night photography has captured the collective imagination of the masses. From the infamously long exposures required by early artists to high-speed color film and the advent of digital technology, the light at night has inspired an explosion of interest among contemporary artists. Natural vistas, celestial bodies, urban landscapes, artificial structures, and nocturnal interludes represent but a few of the limitless subjects of nighttime photography.
Praxis Gallery presents submission of photographic works that explore the fundamental qualities that make night photography - from dusk to dawn - a compelling contemporary art form.

IN-BETWEEN MOMENTS
Reception: Saturday October 15TH 6-8PM CST
Exhibition Dates: Oct 15TH -29TH, 2022
The most perceptive photographers can make compelling pictures out of uninteresting moments. - Alex Tehrani –
French novelist Georges Perec declared that we should found “an anthropology of the ordinary” as revolt against cultural and mass media exploitation of the exotic - the relentless parade of trauma elevated above the routine of everyday events. Perec’s revolt against the frenzy of trauma (the shameful, the voyeuristic and the spectacular) was to excessively document the ordinary in daily life, meticulously accounting for everything and anything in one’s immediate surroundings in an active attempt to uncover the unimportant and the insignificant.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the in-between moments of life and endeavors to notice the unnoticeable, the mundane, the banal and anti-climactic.

He Found Himself, He Will Not Draw Passers-By Anymore
Artist: Sashko Ilov
Reception: Saturday Oct 15TH 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: Oct 15TH - 29TH, 2022
"He found himself, he will not draw passers-by anymore" is a story that takes place between two empty beaches. The walkers on the beach and their experiences of day-to-day plights. Sashko’s artwork covers native and modern elements mixed together and takes a critical view of social, political, and cultural issues. While they use a variety of materials and processes in each project, their methodology is consistent.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS
Opening Night Reception: Sept 24TH, 6-8PM CST
Exhibition Dates: Sept 24th - Oct 8th, 2022
Juror: Elizabeth Flinsch
The rhythm of surfaces, lines, and values is for me the essence of photography; composition should be a constant of preoccupation... an organic coordination of visual elements. – Henri Cartier-Bresson
The term composition means ‘putting together’ or the act of combining parts or elements to form a whole - often adhering to compositional principles that make a work of photographic art more appealing or intriguing to viewers. These principles include the development of rhythm, movement, contrast, balance, unity, proximity, and continuity to create expressive and compelling compositions – while emphasizing different visual concepts.
Praxis Gallery presents works of art that explore composition as a fundamental aspect of the photographic aesthetic – be it pure visual formalism or in support of thematic objectives.

MACRO > LARGER THAN LIFE
Reception: Saturday, Sept 24th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Sept 24th – Oct 8th, 2022
Curated by | Praxis Directors
Macro photography is all about showcasing a subject larger than it is in real life — an extreme close-up of something small. Photography is always a matter of perspective. “It’s an alien world when you get into the macro level.” - Ben Long.
Macro photography challenges the photographer to capture the minute, granular details of a world that generally escapes our daily attention: this can include insects, plants, natural and human produced details of any and every subject matter in the world around us – from the texture of feathers to the geometric labyrinth of a microchip board.
Praxis Gallery presents of photographic art that transforms the miniature into the larger than life, images that showcase the unseen and overlooked, and tiny moments of beauty presented through a magnified perspective.

To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting… It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.

LIQUID ~ SKY
EXHIBITION RECEPTION: Saturday, Sept 10th 6PM-8PM
Exhibition Dates: Aug 27th - Sept 10th, 2022
Curated By: Praxis Directors
Liquid conforms to the shape of its container. The sky is an abstract sphere, centered on the earth. Liquid, Water, Sky and the liminal space between are by definition poetic and symbolic. Yet there are infinite iterations of liquid & sky: consider our human drive to master and contain liquids (pools, levies, faucets and bottles); idiomatic lamentations of “spilt milk” or “water under the bridge”– while also reaching upward in towering buildings, airplanes, and rockets that push skyward.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the ideas of liquid and sky in their myriad iterations; from landscapes to still life – from scientific to conceptual, Praxis seeks a broadly interpreted investigation of these forever flowing, forever ethereal ideas.

Personalities
"the quality or state of being a person" – Merriam Webster
I have always been fascinated by people's stories. Especially captivating are individuals who push convention, driven by self expression. My background as a producer of an Off-Broadway burlesque variety show, Gotham Burlesque, led me to have intimate access to many such compelling people. My curiosity seeks out such unique performers and my earnest acceptance allows for our mutually engaging encounter. I provide the audience and their bold demonstration reminds me, and my viewers, of our common human wish - to be seen.

“Making portraits is more than a physical form, it’s a silent communication in understanding and respect between the photographer and the subject. There’s an internal emotion and fire of the soul that you try to capture. - Sandra”
In her book, Portraits and Persons, writer Cynthia Freeland describes three essential elements that constitute a portrait: “(1) a recognizable physical body (2) an inner life, i.e., some sort of psychological or mental states and (3) self-presentation, or the "posing.”
Praxis Gallery presents photographs that celebrate the aesthetic and conceptual considerations involved in the creation of the portrait: revealing personal narratives or new anthologies through the artistic representation of the subject.

Fantastic and Made of Plastic
A Solo Exhibition by Nicole Houff
Opening Night Reception: Saturday, June 18TH 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: June 18TH - July 2ND, 2022
Fantastic and Made of Plastic
Nicole is a Minneapolis photographer who lives in a plastic world inhabited by infamous residents. Her love for the “even less accurate than Barbie & Ken” realities that 50’s and 60’s entertainment portrays complements her stoic muse and her sense of humor. Additionally, Nicole's photographs have strong design and color elements, often referencing 50’s and 60’s aesthetics. With her introduction in 1959, Barbie & Ken are right at home.
Praxis Gallery presents an exhibit that portrays and parodies societal gender assumptions - playing with interpretations of conventional and absurd social tropes. Expressed through fantastic, plastic dolls, Nicole’s exhibit creates an interpretive playground that will both entertain and resonate with audiences from all gender perspectives.

THE ABSTRACT IMAGE
Opening Night Reception: June 18TH 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: June 18th – July 2nd, 2022
Juror: Ross Anderson
‘An abstract photograph draws away from that which is realistic or literal. It draws away from natural appearances and recognizable subjects in the actual world. Some people even say it departs from true meaning, existence, and reality itself. It stands apart from the concrete whole with its purpose instead depending on conceptual meaning and intrinsic form.' John Suler
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the world through an abstracted lens; utilizing elements of color, light, shadow, texture, shape and line to express meaning outside of traditional representational and documentary styles of photography.

FOOD ~ THE AFTERMATH
Juror | Praxis Directors
Food photography is a still life genre used to create attractive, idealized representations of food to enhance its marketing appeal to the consumers. Praxis is not interested in idealized food; we are interested in photography that documents the leftovers, the remains, the aftermath of food during or after its consumption. Examples of the aftermath of food include: Meal remnants, food covered plates, utensils and cups. Rotting and molding food. Food waste. Pest infested food. Dries bits, moldy bits. Food dried to surfaces. Burnt food. Food covered faces and clothing. Food dropped to surfaces. Food in environmental settings. People eating food. Food chewing, mashing, gnashing and any unvarnished representations of packaged, processed and frozen food types.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore any possible concept of the aftermath of food.

Madness (mental illness) is something that frightens and fascinates us all. It is a word with which we are universally familiar yet haunts the human imagination. Through centuries, in poetry, prose, drama, and the visual arts, “madness" has been on display for all to see.
With devastating effect, mental illness can disturb our commonsense assumptions; create unbearable disruptions in the routine of daily living; and turn our experience and our expectations upside down. And yet, it is this upside-down world view that opens a universe of unique and inventive perspectives oblivious to those free from disruptions of the mind.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores ideas linked to mental health, be it conflict or humor, fiction, or fact, or any other literal or ephemeral lens-based investigation. We welcome photographic art that questions conventional assumptions about mental health or celebrates the unique perspective only visible to those who can see the "beauty in madness”.

WORDS, WORDS, WORDS
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 21ST 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: May 21ST - June 4TH, 2022
Juror | Dallas Crow
The old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” seems to suggest that a photograph transcends language, but words have been a key part of many important photographers’ work—from the billboards and signs in many Walker Evans’ photos to Lee Friedlander’s 2019 book, Signs, for example. The interplay of language and image can create a vivid sense of tension, irony, or poignance. The size and shapes of a font are visual aspects that can carry as much weight as any other aspect in the frame.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that includes written language as a fundamental aspect of the composition, including text in the form of signs or fragments of signs, handwriting scrawled over the photo, graffiti and palimpsests, just to name a few iterations of the theme.

TRANSIENCE
Opening Night Reception: April 16TH 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: April 16th – 30th, 2022
Guest Curator: Aline Smithson
The last two years have been profound in our reconsiderations of self. The pandemic has transformed the way we behave, has affected our psyches, and made us examine what is most important in our lives. We discovered that everything is fleeting and temporary, ever changing, moving, and evolving. Transience comes in many forms and awareness of the transience of all things heightens appreciation of their beauty and evokes a gentle sadness at their passing.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that speaks to the transitory nature of life--from flora and fauna, from objects left behind after a loved ones passing, to memories and loss.

THE STREETS
Opening Night Reception: April 16th 6-8pm.
Exhibition Dates: Apr 16th - 30th, 2022
Juror | Sarah Weiss
"Street Photography became recognized as a genre in its own right during the early 1930s. Street Photography is unique in the way it is associated with the photographer's skill in capturing something of the mystery and aura of everyday city living. The Street Photographer is then often likened to the historical figure of the flâneur: namely someone who mingles anonymously amongst the crowd observing and recording the ways the unsuspecting city dweller interacts with his or her environment"
Praxis Gallery presents the submission of photographic art that explores the genre of street photography from all angles, including people, urban structure, and documentary subject matter.

Since the beginnings of photography in the mid-nineteenth century, women have had prominent roles as artists. The popularization of the medium in the first decades of the twentieth century met with a confluence of social forces, including art and activism, that expanded opportunities for women in both art and public life. Working in a range of styles, pioneering artists like Anna Atkins, Imogen Cunningham, Berenice Abbott and Carrie Mae Weems forged independent perspectives that changed how we picture the world. [CMOA]
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art created by or about women image-makers, including trans-women and femme/feminine-identifying, genderqueer, and non-binary lens-based photographic artists.

THE STILL LIFE
Opening Night Reception: Sat, Mar 19th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Mar 19th - April 2nd 2022
Juror | Kimberly Witham
Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer extensive leeway and precise control in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. Still life photography is a demanding genre, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with composition and design skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that investigates the genre of the Still Life. Submissions may explore classical to conceptual aspects of the still life, photographing object arrangements that intrigue, engage or entertain the viewer.

EMPTY PLACES : ABANDONED SPACES
Opening Reception: Saturday Feb 19th 6-8pm
Exhibit Dates: Feb 19th - Mar 5th, 2022
Juror | Elizabeth Flinsch
Through the visual representation of abandoned spaces, artifacts of history are at once fresh and new, ancient and decayed. The past continues to live in these forsaken, ruined, or empty spaces and we ask— Who were the people who lived and worked here? What were their lives like? What were their stories? What happened to them in these spaces?
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the visual and social significance of abandoned space - where derelict factories, churches, private houses or other empty places serve as the basis for creative investigation.

MOTION > BLUR
Opening Reception: Saturday Feb 19th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Feb 19th – Mar 5th, 2022
In most cases, photography is used to “freeze time,” with a still image. Motion in photography creates a paradox: the image is a frozen moment in time but what is captured is an object that is a blur of motion – an apparent streaking, bending, distorting and /or movement of light and objects in the foreground or background of the image frame. Blur can demonstrate the velocity of movement. It can convey the emotional dimensions of the subject photographed; presenting dream like qualities by invoking the surreal and transitory nature of time passing. Meteors streak across the sky, ghostly figures move through a room, the artist paints shapes with a light source. These are some examples of how blur represents motion in photography.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that demonstrates the fundamental qualities that make motion & blur a compelling element of contemporary photography.

NARRATIVES ~
FIGMENTS & FRAGMENTS

THE SHADOW ASPECT
Opening Reception: Saturday, Jan 15th 6pm-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 15th - 29th 2022
Juror | Sandra Chen Weinstein
‘Most people think that shadows follow, precede, surround beings or objects. The truth is that they also surround words, ideas, desires, deeds, impulses and memories.’ Elie Wiesel.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the formal, conceptual and metaphoric implications of the shadow. Submissions may focus on the shadow as pure visual form expressed through the creation of line, shape, pattern and texture. They may also examine the cultural and psychological implications of the shadow - exploring ideas of foreboding, internal conflict, passages into the unconsciousness, or other ephemeral interpretations.
