FIGMENTS & FRAGMENTS
Opening Night Reception: Saturday Jan 15th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 15th - 29th, 2022
Guest Curator | Emma Powell
The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusion are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what is being left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form; they may be literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal.

Opening Night Reception: Dec 7th, 2018
Exhibition Dates: Dec 7th 2018 - Jan 7th, 2019
EMPTY PLACES : ABANDONED SPACES
Juror | Carl Corey
Through the visual representation of abandoned spaces, artifacts of history are at once fresh and new, ancient and decayed. The past continues to live in these forsaken, ruined, or empty spaces and we ask— Who were the people who lived and worked here? What were their lives like? What were their stories? What happened to them in these spaces?
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the visual and social significance of abandoned space - where derelict factories, churches, private houses or other empty places serve as the basis for creative investigation.

The Portrait
Opening Night: 6-8PM, Nov 16th, 2018
Exhibition Dates: Nov 16th - Dec 5th, 2018
Juror | Douglas Beasley
In her book, Portraits and Persons, writer Cynthia Freeland describes three essential elements that constitute a portrait: “(1) a recognizable physical body (2) an inner life, i.e., some sort of psychological or mental states and (3) self-presentation, or the "posing.” Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that celebrates the aesthetic and conceptual considerations involved in the creation of the portrait: revealing personal narratives or new anthologies through the artistic representation of the subject.

Dallas Crow: The Other Border
Opening Night: 6-9PM, Oct 19th
Exhibition Dates: Oct 19th - Nov 4th, 2018
While the Southern border of the U.S. seems to be in the news every day, “The Other Border,” a sparsely-populated, roughly 2000-mile stretch from International Falls to the Pacific Ocean, including parts of five states, encompasses forests, lakes, rivers, plains, farms, mountains, desert, dwindling small towns, two national parks, and two exclaves. This documentary project looks at a large swath of the U.S. that is often ignored by the national media, popular culture, and most tourists, and has been left almost entirely untouched by the economy of big box stores, malls, and chain restaurants and motels. The photos in this exhibit offer glimpses into parts of an America that few Americans ever see or think about.

The Shape of Things
Opening Night: 6-8PM, Sept 28th
Exhibition Dates: Sept 28th - October 17th, 2018
The rhythm of surfaces, lines, and values is for me the essence of photography; composition should be a constant of preoccupation... an organic coordination of visual elements. – Henri Cartier-Bresson
The term composition means ‘putting together’ or the act of combining parts or elements to form a whole - often adhering to compositional principles that make a work of photographic art more appealing or intriguing to viewers. These principles include the development of rhythm, movement, contrast, balance, unity, proximity and continuity to create expressive and compelling compositions – while emphasizing different visual, social, or political concepts.
Praxis Gallery presents works of art that explore composition as a fundamental aspect of the photographic aesthetic – be it pure visual formalism or in support of thematic objectives.
International Juried Photography Exhibition
The Found Object
Opening Night: 6-8PM, Aug 24th
Exhibition Dates: Aug 24th - Sept 18th, 2018
Juror | Laura Migliorino
A "found object" is a material artifact discovered by chance and assigned esthetic value in an artist’s hand. Found art may include a wide array of objects and items either discarded, forgotten, dropped, or misplaced – such as shoes, a fork, shopping carts, signs, doll heads, abandoned cars, clocks, mementos, or any object that can be reimagined through the lens of a camera… so long as the artist believes that the discovered object possesses a certain aesthetic or talismanic quality - stemming from its appearance, social or personal history.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that investigates this idiom; exploring the subject of the “found object” as pure visual form, detached from its history or utility - or conversely, the representation of the object as a catalyst for exploring broader issues such as subjectivity and socialization, memory and loss, or love and death.

The Abstract Image
Opening Night: June 8th, 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: June 8th - June 27th, 2018
‘An abstract photograph draws away from that which is realistic or literal. It draws away from natural appearances and recognizable subjects in the actual world. Some people even say it departs from true meaning, existence, and reality itself. It stands apart from the concrete whole with its purpose instead depending on conceptual meaning and intrinsic form.' John Suler
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the world through an abstracted lens; utilizing elements of color, light, shadow, texture, shape and line to express meaning outside of traditional representational and documentary styles of photography.

MONO - KROMATIK
Opening Night: 6-9PM, May 4th, 2018
Exhibit Dates: May 4th - May 31st, 2018
Half a century after the advent of color film, black and white & monochromatic photography continues to capture our collective imagination. Utilizing tone, contrast, texture and shape, monochromatic photography strips its subject to only the most essential visual elements; revealing a sense of soul, substance and meaning – separate from the shifting sentiments, symbolism and cultural associations of color imagery.
Praxis Gallery presents an exhibit of photographic works that demonstrate the fundamental qualities that make black and white & monochromatic photography an enduring, contemporary art form.
MAKING STRANGE
Opening Night: 6-9PM, Mar 30th, 2018
Exhibit Dates: Mar 30th - April 27th, 2018
How do we document what happens and recurs everyday: the banal, the common, the ordinary? Can we rescue astonishment from the forgotten obvious by finding unexplored perspectives to depict our common places and familiar activities in startling and engrossing new ways?
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that search for the iconic and ironic in the everyday world around us; that portray the people, places and things which have become ordinary to us in new, imaginative and expressive ways.

The Shadow Aspect
Opening Night Reception: January 19th, 2018
Exhibition Dates: Jan 19th - Feb 17th, 2018
Theme | The Shadow Aspect
‘Most people think that shadows follow, precede, surround beings or objects. The truth is that they also surround words, ideas, desires, deeds, impulses and memories.’ Elie Wiesel. Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that explores the formal, conceptual and metaphoric implications of the shadow. Submissions may focus on the shadow as pure visual form expressed through the creation of line, shape, pattern and texture. They may also examine the cultural and psychological implications of the shadow - exploring ideas of foreboding, internal conflict, passages into the unconsciousness, or other ephemeral interpretations.

The Decisive Moment
Opening Night Reception: Nov 2nd, 2017
Exhibition Dates: Nov 3rd - Nov 30th, 2017
Theme | The Decisive Moment
Twentieth century French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson described the decisive moment as ‘the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression.”
While the concept of the decisive moment is often associated with dynamic, synchronic activity captured in an instant - it may just as well apply to the photographic image that records a thoughtful moment of fleeting solitude or calm.

TIKONKO
Praxis Gallery & Photo Arts Center Presents
By David L. Parker, MD
October 5th - October 29th, 2017
Artist Talk & Reception October 5th, 6:00 - 8:30
Since 1992, Dr. David Parker has pursued dual careers: working as an occupational physician and epidemiologist in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and photographing working children around the world.
His most recent photographs were taken on a trip to the diamond mines of the Tikonko and Kona chiefdoms in Sierra Leone. This work represents Dr. Parker’s continuing efforts to record the immediate and long-term effects of child labor on vulnerable communities.
